Belly Dance Technique Workshops with Kalayla!
Join Kalayla from 6:30 - 8:30pm on Wednesday evenings for a brain and body workout! These 6 different themed workshops will have us drilling movements and working on our belly dance technique; to then learn a choreography in that theme or style! These six themes will range in styles and props used. Below is listed the dates and the theme of each workshop.
Class starts with a warm up then we dance to end with a cool down. All props will be able to borrow or feel free to bring your own.
Open to all genders and dancer levels. Join a single session for $45 or $190 for all six classes.

June 24th- Classic Era, July 8th- Veil, 15th- Dance for a Cause, 22nd- Saidi, 29th- Mahraganat, August 12th- Balance Props.

Info about Themes:
Classic Era- June 24th. Song: “Enta Omri” (Shortend) by Mohammed Abdel Wahab. Dancing to a classic “every dancer should know” song. We will look at the style of Classical Era Belly Dance and pay homage to Soheir Zaki, Nagwa Foua, and others dancers of the 1960s in this Choreo.
Veil- July 8th. Song: “Best of Times” Khaled Hammad. Exploring the prop, Veil, a piece of fabric that can help tell your story. Traditionally in Egyptian Style belly dance we enter with a veil and then toss away. We will make it the highlight of our choreo here instead!
Dance for a Cause- July 15th. Song: “Hotel Palestina” by Rola Azar and Phil Halo. We all dance for a reason. Whether it is for your health, for fun, or in this case to raise awareness. We all know the wars that constantly fill our headlines, and for many of us it effects us. What can we do? How can belly dance be effected by a battle or a policy? Let’s take a dive into culture of belly dance and how you can make a difference in the world around you. To continue with the theme, half the payment for this workshop will be donated to the Children of Gaza! Let’s help those kids!!!
Saidi- Jully 22nd. Song: “Saidi Cane” by The Henkesh Brothers. Saidi, one of the many rhythms we dance to, is more than just a rhythem. It is a people and way of life in Upper Egypt. Learning the rhythm and the use of your Assaya (cane). This fun little choreo will have you bouncing and smiling all night long.
Mahraganat- July 29th. Song: “Beggin’“ by DJ Yofa. Mahraganat is a newer form of dance coming from the streets of Cairo, Egypt. In particular the “ghetto" parts of Cairo this popular genre of music comes from the working people. It speaks of the everyday problems of society and with affluents of political unrest and how the every day person deals. This fast choreo will have your blood pumpin!
Balance Props- August 12th. Song: “Three Sisters” by Beats Antique. You are not a belly dancer without your balancing prop! With either a Sword or Candle tray you will learn to balance these objects while dancing. This fusion based choreo will work with any balance prop!
